Templeton Rye Feature Length Documentary Premieres December 4th

(Des Moines, IA) – Greetings from Modern American Cinema! We are proud to announce that on the eve of the anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition, we will have the world premiere of Kristian Day's Capone's Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye on December 4th, 2011 at the Fleur Cinema in Des Moines at 7PM.

The film chronicles the history of the infamous whiskey cookers of Carroll county from their outlaw days of Prohibition to the legalized and much sought after liquor.

"It's about the history of the whiskey," says Director Kristian Day. "We have spent almost an entire year compiling research and interview subjects from all over the state. Historians from Dubuque to Sioux City who are experts in both the Prohibition era and Al Capone's presence in Iowa have been involved in the production process since the beginning. I am very excited to finally share the rich history of Templeton Rye with the rest of the world."

This movie is the third movie in Day's MADE IN IOWA documentary series, which has previously included Brent Houzenga: Hybrid Pioneer (available on DVD) and Templeton Rye: Iowa's Good Stuff (30 minute short), which aired along side the Ken Burns' series Prohibition on Iowa Public Television this past October. The ongoing series tells the stories of the innovative people, places and ideas that have influenced Iowa’s culture.
If you work or have worked on horror pictures you often get asked "What's your favorite horror flick?" There is never a consistent answer from me because my taste changes so often based on my mood. One thing is for sure, I have never been a real big slasher fan. Most are very predictable and the more recent films lack a lot of spirit. I do love a lot of supernatural films, in fact I can boldly say I have enjoyed the most recent Paranormal Activity franchise. For this years film choice for the Halloween season I am choosing the original 1972 feature, Tales from the Crypt. I remember renting this movie on VHS from Mr. Movies near Collins Road in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The filmed opened with the sound of dooming church organs and the camera panning through an old English cemetery. You can almost fool yourself into smelling the scent of comic books in the air. The movie shows its age but it is a reminder of what classic filmmaking is all about. There are so many great actors in this including Peter Cushing (Star Wars/various Hammer films). Each piece in this anthology has a moral lesson for a doomed individual. My personal favorite is the story of the poor old man who loved children but was hated by two men that wanted him to move (Peter Cushing piece). It's almost heartbreaking to watch but justice is served. This film was directed by Freddie Francis and also stars Joan Collins.

Hey folks!

My company, Modern American Cinema, was a sponsor for this years Des Moines Zombie Walk. So I was there running around with a camera chasing over 800 zombies as they marched up to Iowa's capital hill. This was the biggest zombie walk I have ever seen (and I have been to a few). The event was a benefit for the Central Iowa Homeless Shelter.

Other Sponsors included:

Zombie Burger + Drink Lab, Finder's Creepers, Hor-riff-ic Productions, Des Moines Derby Dames, Heroic Ink, and Fong's Pizza.

A big thank you to everyone involved!Kristian Dayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00308813021336072270noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8510113270592177288.post-21897522773094821772011-09-19T07:57:00.000-07:002011-09-19T07:57:08.924-07:00Templeton Rye PBS Special Official Announcement
A heads to up to everyone in Iowa and the surrounding borders. They are from the town of Fort Dodge which does not have the best reputation as far as a community is concerned (don't worry this is a common thought, even among the town's own). We shot the video in the ol' dirty dodge back in the beginning of August. The group is still working on their debut album but once I heard their first single I said "lets do it!"Kristian Dayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00308813021336072270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8510113270592177288.post-56381234339159891452011-06-14T13:14:00.000-07:002011-06-14T13:14:41.181-07:00Now Available: Dub In Deep Red CD & MP3
<a href="http://kristianday.bandcamp.com/album/dub-in-deep-red">Dub in Deep Red by Kristian Day</a>

My newest album, Dub in Deep Red (actually recorded over 2 years), is now available in both CD and MP3 formats.

The entire album is inspired by the exotic music of Martin Denny. Lots of ambient drones created with the classic VCS3 mixed with punk and r&b style drums. A total summer/beach album. Enjoy!
Day describes the film, “James Bearden: Man of Metal,” as a surreal and avant garde-style film featuring Bearden’s metal sculptures, which Day describes as “antiques of the future.”

“James is building pieces from a post-apocalyptic mind,” Day says. He says the film is inspired by a style of documentary called “mondo film” from the 1960‘s and will mesh well with Bearden’s personality and unusual art.

Read the full interview at Des Moines is Not Boring.comKristian Dayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00308813021336072270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8510113270592177288.post-86815863618821569392011-03-25T19:23:00.000-07:002011-03-27T20:23:42.146-07:00'Iowa Thing' Open Reception at PCGA in Fort Dodge, Iowa

Brent Houzenga: Hybrid Pioneer along with six of my short films will be playing at Permanent Collection Gallery Arts in Fort Dodge, Iowa from March 25 through April 22nd. I shot my documentary, Brent Houzenga: Hybrid Pioneer, at the same time I shot my upcoming feature, Vessel. On the business end of things, I have to have one film in pre-production, one shooting, one in post-production, and one currently screening. This is the life of an independent filmmaker. I don’t have day job anymore. It’s the only way to keep business going.

On the creative end, I feel it helps me. There is a lot more pressure on me when I direct fiction, however I can be a lot more creative. I don’t have as much pressure in shooting a documentary, however there really isn’t a lot of room to make the rooms melt or have heads explode. There is also a huge learning experience with doing things like this that I can use with both styles.
Kristian Dayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00308813021336072270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8510113270592177288.post-9407453878510845782011-03-20T18:59:00.000-07:002011-03-20T18:59:20.530-07:00James Bearden: Man of Metals Teaser/Promo

Along side the film Capone's Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye I am also directing a documentary with artist/metal sculptor James Bearden.

There will be an open studio reception at the Market Building in Des Moines, Iowa on April 2nd, 2011.
Alongside Bearden's his new work, I will also have a sound installation playing along side his creations.

Info:

April 2nd, 2011 6PM to 9PM

The Market Building, 118 SE 4th Street, Des Moines, IA

Kristian Dayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00308813021336072270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8510113270592177288.post-46804521876930794952011-03-09T17:30:00.001-08:002011-03-09T17:40:40.108-08:00Ambient Martyr: Selected Works of Kristian Day NOW AVAILABLE on Itunes

Track List

1. I can’t really remember a time where I wasn’t watching a cartoon or kids program. We didn’t have a lot of money so I watched a lot of things over and over again. This is the time where the young mind is very fragile and can be shaped easily for the long journey that lies ahead. None of these tales that I am telling you have anything to do with horror or anything around it. It’s amazing what parents think is good and healthy for their children to watch. Oh how little do they understand a child’s mind.

Read the full article here.Kristian Dayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00308813021336072270noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8510113270592177288.post-24534213012839931552010-06-26T17:57:00.000-07:002010-06-26T17:59:51.790-07:00In The Company Of SoldiersThis has finally come to see the light of day...

This album was originally recorded in 2005.
