Day is now preparing to shoot a different type of documentary he describes as more of an “art-house film” or a “midnight-movie-style documentary” about local metal artist, James Bearden. Day describes the film, “James Bearden: Man of Metal,” as a surreal and avant garde-style film featuring Bearden’s metal sculptures, which Day describes as “antiques of the future.”
“James is building pieces from a post-apocalyptic mind,” Day says. He says the film is inspired by a style of documentary called “mondo film” from the 1960‘s and will mesh well with Bearden’s personality and unusual art.
Brent Houzenga: Hybrid Pioneer along with six of my short films will be playing at Permanent Collection Gallery Arts in Fort Dodge, Iowa from March 25 through April 22nd. The exhibit will also feature new work by Brent Houzenga, Van Holmgren, Chris Roberts, Jon Baldwin, Ian Leckie, Michelle Holley, and Kyle Thye.
Opening Reception: March 25th, 2011 from 6PM to 9PM.

The films included are: A Woman Who Writes, Animal, Cactua, Birth of A Star, Drawings by Billy and His Friends, and The Process.

Doing the two back-to-back, what are the main differences between working on a documentary and shooting fiction, and how are you allowing your personal style as a filmmaker to shine through in both of them?
Honestly, I have to do both at the same time. I shot my documentary, Brent Houzenga: Hybrid Pioneer, at the same time I shot my upcoming feature, Vessel. On the business end of things, I have to have one film in pre-production, one shooting, one in post-production, and one currently screening. This is the life of an independent filmmaker. I don’t have day job anymore. It’s the only way to keep business going.
On the creative end, I feel it helps me. There is a lot more pressure on me when I direct fiction, however I can be a lot more creative. I don’t have as much pressure in shooting a documentary, however there really isn’t a lot of room to make the rooms melt or have heads explode. There is also a huge learning experience with doing things like this that I can use with both styles.
Along side the film Capone's Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye I am also directing a documentary with artist/metal sculptor James Bearden.
There will be an open studio reception at the Market Building in Des Moines, Iowa on April 2nd, 2011.
Alongside Bearden's his new work, I will also have a sound installation playing along side his creations.
